Microdiscectomy

What is a Microdiscectomy?

A microdiscectomy is a minimally invasive spinal surgery performed to relieve nerve compression caused by a disc prolapse or bulging disc in the lumbar spine. This procedure aims to alleviate severe nerve pain in the leg, known as sciatica, by removing the portion of the disc that is pressing on the nerve.

Using a small incision and high-powered magnification, the surgeon accesses the affected disc with precision, minimizing disruption to surrounding tissues. Most patients experience significant pain relief and can return home the day after surgery.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Before Surgery

  • A thorough assessment will be conducted, including imaging (MRI or CT scan) to confirm the affected disc.
  • You will receive instructions on fasting and any necessary pre-operative preparations.
  • The procedure will be explained, and any questions or concerns addressed.

During Surgery

  • The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia.
  • A small incision is made in the lower back to access the spine.
  • Using magnification and specialised instruments, the surgeon carefully removes the portion of the prolapsed disc pressing on the nerve.
  • The incision is then closed with minimal disruption to surrounding tissues.
  • The procedure typically takes around 60 minutes.

After Surgery

  • You will be monitored in a recovery area before being moved to a hospital room.
  • Pain relief medication and mobility guidance will be provided.
  • Most patients can return home the following day.

Recovery & Aftercare

Pain Relief

Many patients experience immediate improvement in leg pain, with gradual healing over the following weeks.

Activity Restrictions

Light activities can be resumed within a few days. Strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and bending should be avoided for several weeks.

Physiotherapy

A tailored rehabilitation program may be recommended to strengthen the lower back and prevent recurrence.

Follow-Up

A post-operative review will be scheduled to assess your recovery and address any concerns.

How Long Does Recovery Take?

Most patients return to normal daily activities within two to four weeks. Full recovery, including a return to strenuous activities, may take up to three months, depending on individual healing and rehabilitation progress.
